Dental Fluorosis as a Marker for Fluoride-induced Cognitive Impairment
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Analogous to the neurotoxicity markers of the Kayser-Fleischer ring in the cornea in Wilson’s disease and the Burton line in the gums in chronic lead poisoning, the finding in several studies of a significant relationship between dental fluorosis and cognitive impairment indicates that dental fluorosis can be regarded as a marker for fluoride-induced cognitive impairment. As noted by Xiang et al., in the present issue of Fluoride, the prevalence of dental fluorosis can be significantly decreased by reducing the intake of fluoride and it can be anticipated that fluorideinduced neurotoxicity would be prevented by the same means.

Development of Fluoride Toxicity including Cognitive Impairment with Reduced Iq: Pathophysiology, Interactions with Other Elements, and Predisposing and Protective Factors
The development of toxicity to the fluoride ion (F) may be complex and multifactorial with a number of pathophysiological pathways being possible, with the potential for interactions between toxins involving additivity, synergism, and antagonism, and with a number of other factors having predisposing and protective effects. In addition to cognitive impairment with a reduced intelligence quotien...
متن کامل4-phenylbutyrate Mitigates Fluoride-Induced Cytotoxicity in ALC Cells
Chronic fluoride over-exposure during pre-eruptive enamel development can cause dental fluorosis. Severe dental fluorosis is characterized by porous, soft enamel that is vulnerable to erosion and decay. The prevalence of dental fluorosis among the population in the USA, India and China is increasing. Other than avoiding excessive intake, treatments to prevent dental fluorosis remain unknown. We...
متن کاملSevere dental fluorosis and cognitive deficits.
Choi et al. (2014) is a pilot study of the association of exposure to fluoride with cognitive function of children in a Chinese community. Although limited it provides more useful information than almost all the studies included in the earlier review by Choi et al. (2012). Most of the reports considered in that reviewwere very brief with little detail or consideration of confounding factors. Po...
متن کاملFluoride supplement-induced case reports
Two cases are presented which exhibit classical dental fluorosis in the permanent dentition which is most logically explained by the excessive intake of fluoride. The cases emphasize the narrow therapeutic range of systemic fluorides in children and the need for analyzing samples of local drinking water before caries-preventive fluoride therapy can be initiated. The potential for induction of f...
متن کاملIs Dental Fluorosis Caused by Thyroid Hormone Disturbances?
Although it has been known since 1917 that mottled dental enamel (later recognized as dental fluorosis—DF) is identical with that observed in thyroid dysfunction, disturbances of thyroid hormone metabolism during crucial periods of tooth development as the primary cause of DF have received very little consideration by dental researchers. New findings indicate that thyroid hormone metabolism is ...
